PRR: Silves launches competition to restore the Cathedral's roofs and facades

Silves City Council has launched a public tender for the restoration of the Cathedral's roofs and facades, with a base value of €1.5 million.
Last May, as part of the PRR reprogramming, 1.2 million euros were allocated to Silves Cathedral, while 2.2 million euros earmarked for the Almedina walls and gate were withdrawn.
The vice-president of the Silves City Council, Luísa Conduto, explained that the financing for the project is guaranteed by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), with funds that were earmarked for the restoration of the walls of the Islamic Almedina.
According to the mayor, due to the reprogramming of the PRR, the two million euros earmarked for the intervention on the walls “were channeled” to the Silves Cathedral, through a contract signed with the Government.
According to the announcement of the procedure, published today in the Official Gazette, the project involves the restoration of the roofs and facades of the Gothic-style monument, built from 1268 during the reign of Afonso III.
According to the document, the work includes the treatment and repair of artistic metal parts, which present active corrosion, protection of the fixings to the masonry and stonework with resin, repair of the weather vane with a cross at the top of the bell tower and the restoration of the clock in stone material.
The work to be carried out also includes the restoration of the iron frames of the stained glass windows and the wooden exterior doors and the repair of plaster on walls in areas where they are damaged.
Conservation and restoration work “must be carried out” in accordance with the Special Technical Conditions (CTE), by conservators-restorers and conservation and restoration technicians, the specifications state.
