João Campolargo admits defeat in Ílhavo and takes his place as opposition councilor

João Campolargo, from the citizens' movement Unir para Fazer, who lost Sunday's elections for the City Council to the PSD/CDS-PP coalition, announced today that he will take up the position of councilor in the opposition.
The PSD/CDS-PP coalition won the elections in the municipality of Ílhavo, in the district of Aveiro, but without an absolute majority, obtaining 6,580 votes (35.74%) for the Chamber, while the Unir para Fazer movement was the second most voted, obtaining 6,405 votes (34.79%) and the PS was the third most voted political force, with 2,458 votes (13.35%).
In the next municipal executive, led by Rui Dias, the PSD/CDS-PP coalition has three mandates, the same as Unir para Fazer, while the PS maintains one councilor.
"I will take office and be among the councilors, and we will be available to work together with the executive that will be formed," said João Campolargo.
Regarding the role of the Unir para Fazer movement in the local government bodies where it is represented, João Campolargo says he will not give up the oversight role that falls to him, now in the opposition.
"We will carry out our assessment, our oversight, and we always hope that this will be a mandate from this alliance with a very close and responsible service," he said in statements to Lusa.
Reflecting on the election results, the outgoing mayor of Ílhavo acknowledges that his movement “suffered a defeat, despite significant support.”
"The citizens' movement lost by a narrow margin of votes to a two-party coalition, which was a sign of recognition and admiration for the work done. There was significant convergence in terms of territory and polling stations, but it wasn't enough for victory," he declared.
Regarding the future, he guarantees that "the movement will act as a monitoring force, recognizing what is done well, and will use the knowledge acquired to prepare itself to provide a better response and participation in the democratic discussion over the next four years."
