GNR reinforces forest fire surveillance and has already arrested 18 people

Eighty watch posts and more than 140 forest surveillance cameras were activated to prevent and detect fires, as part of the Safe Forest Campaign, said the GNR today, which has already arrested 18 alleged arsonists. The National Republican Guard (GNR), through the Nature and Environmental Protection Service (SEPNA), “activated 80 Watch Posts (PV) of the Primary Network, which are manned by a total of 320 operators”, on Monday, it indicated, in a statement. This operation is being carried out within the scope of the Fire Surveillance and Detection Network, which integrates the Forest Video Surveillance System and the National Network of Watch Posts of the Safe Forest 2025 Campaign. From June 29th, 150 Secondary Network Surveillance Posts will be activated, operated by more than 600 technicians, the note adds, highlighting that, with regard to the Forest Video Surveillance System, it is currently “composed of 147 video surveillance cameras”. In terms of awareness-raising actions, the GNR had carried out, up until Wednesday, a total of 2,845 actions, covering 55,150 people, “with the aim of preventing risky behavior, promoting the adoption of self-protection measures and encouraging the responsible use of fire by communities”. “To date, 18 arrests have been recorded, 14 of which were in flagrante delicto, and 136 suspects have also been identified,” added the GNR. At this stage, the military are on the ground, covering the “fuel management strips” (linear structures planned on a regional scale, which have the function of reducing the burnt area of a potential fire and creating opportunities for its effective and safe combat) of the priority parishes, with the aim of signaling and georeferencing rural land with “potential fire risk”. At the same time, information and awareness-raising actions are being promoted among property owners, so that they can clean their land by the end of this month, avoiding falling into “non-compliance” from June 1st. “This phase of the campaign has the main objective of prevention with awareness-raising actions aimed at citizens and entities, with a view to changing behaviors”, he said.
The Safe Forest 2025 Campaign, which started on February 1 and runs until November 30, “contributes decisively to a significant reduction in the number of serious incidents”, through prevention and increased patrolling in forest areas, he added.
