Defendant named for forest fire due to negligence

In a statement, the GNR explains that, following a report “reporting a forest fire”, members of the Nature and Environmental Protection Service (SEPNA) went to the scene and “found that the suspect had cleared paths using a tracked machine, which was considered the probable cause of the fire’s ignition.”
After the incident, “the suspect was charged and the facts were referred to the Mirandela Judicial Court.”
The authority reports that it "remains vigilant in preventing and combating rural fires, actively contributing to the criminal accountability of their perpetrators and to the protection of people, property and natural heritage."
It also emphasizes that the protection of people and property, in the context of rural fires, continues to be “one of the GNR's priorities, supported by preventive action and patrolling efforts in forest areas.”
The GNR also states that "burning and fires are the main causes of fires in Portugal", that "burning, burning piles and bonfires is prohibited whenever there is a "very high" or "maximum" level of rural fire danger, and is dependent on authorization or prior communication in other periods", and finally, asks that, "to avoid accidents, follow safety rules, always be accompanied and carry your cell phone with you"
At a time when information is more important than ever, support regional and local journalism. Access to most VTM news is (still) free, but it's not free; journalism costs money and requires investment. This contribution is a way to directly support A Voz de Trás-os-Montes and its journalists. Our counterpart is independent and local journalism, but not only that. It means continuing to inform despite all contingencies; we never stop for a single day.
