Construction work began today, July 17, on Surfers Cove, the first Wavegarden artificial wave park in Portugal, located in Óbidos, with its opening scheduled for 2026, the company announced.
With an investment of 25 million euros, the project includes a surfing lagoon with Wavegarden Cove technology, capable of generating up to 1,000 waves per hour, and will be the centerpiece of a four-star resort that aims to promote tourism and the sport in the West region.
The infrastructure will occupy five hectares and will include 56 accommodation units, a restaurant, a surf shop, a spa, a skate park, paddle tennis and beach tennis courts, a surf school, a gym, and other leisure facilities.
According to Manuel Maria Vasconcelos, CEO of Surfers Cove, the start of construction "is a historic moment for tourism and sports in Portugal." The park is expected to create around 50 direct jobs and generate €10 million per year once fully operational.
The project has the support of several private investors and is co-financed by European funds under the Innovation and Digital Transition Program – COMPETE 2030.
