Beatriz Roxo and João Martins reach the top 8 in the European Championship

Beatriz Roxo, in the women's elimination round, and João Martins, in the men's elimination round, finished eighth on the first day of the European Under-23 and Junior Track Championships, which began yesterday in the municipality of Anadia. At the National Velodrome in Sangalhos, the two Portuguese cyclists achieved the best results of the 11-member Portuguese team, finishing eighth in their respective elimination races in the Under-23 category. In the women's race, the champion was Russian Valeria Valgonen, who won the 2023 Volta a Portugal and is one of the most highly rated cyclists in the race in Anadia, while Spain's Isabella Escalera finished second and Italy's Anita Baima third. Belgian Tom Crabbe won the men's race, ahead of Frenchman Emmanuel Houcou in second and Denmark's William Lowth in third. In the individual pursuit, an unsurprising triumph went to Britain's Josh Charlton, at 22 years old one of the world's greats in the discipline, with two silver medals from the 2024 Senior World Championships, beating two Italians: Renato Favero for silver and Luca Giaimi for bronze. Former three-time junior world champion Federica Venturelli gave Italy another gold medal in the individual pursuit, relegating Britain's Grace Lister, already a medalist at the senior European Championships, to silver.
The European Under/23 and Junior Championships will take place at the National Velodrome until Sunday, continuing today with the finals of, among others, the Under-23 men's and women's scratch and the Junior men's and women's elimination.
