After approving controversial law, Zelensky backtracks

Last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky approved a law that would limit the independence of the country's two largest anti-corruption agencies, placing them under the supervision of the prosecutor general. The measure, as well as the speed of its approval (within one day), sparked strong protests both domestically and internationally. In Kyiv, citizens took to the streets. Alarm bells rang in Europe, concluding that this law could undermine Ukraine's accession to the European Union – a key objective for Zelensky.
Thus, the Ukrainian president reversed his decision, introducing a bill that would restore the independence of institutions responsible for monitoring corruption. The bill was approved by the Ukrainian parliament on Thursday, with 331 votes in favor and 9 abstentions.
Thus, the leader of a country fighting for its sovereignty backs down, not risking his credibility before the people at a crucial moment.
