Mysterious underground attraction on the Baltic Sea will open to tourists. Previously only bats lived there

The 150-year-old water reservoir Stara Orunia will soon open to visitors. After a break of several months, during which only the bats living there could see this place, tourists will once again enter the mysterious Tri-City underground. This extraordinary attraction can be visited as part of the Gdańsk Waterworks Trail, which also includes two other underground reservoirs. "While here, we can experience ascetic sensations. There is little water now, but the reservoir is illuminated. We have the impression that it is medieval times," says Monika Kasprzak, archaeologist and guide, in an interview with Dziennik Bałtycki.
Underground attraction by the seaThis attraction of Gdańsk is 156 years old, and still few people know about it. We are talking about the Stara Orunia water reservoir on Kampinoska Street. Up until the 1970s, this facility played a very important role for the residents of Gdańsk, because it was here that the drinking water reservoir was located. Then the place became a tourist attraction, as well as the largest bat habitat in the whole of Pomerania, which allowed it to be classified as a Natura 2000 area. "There was a time when even about 500 of them hibernated here. Now there are fewer, but it is still a considerable number. Bats in Orunia are long-eared bats, long-eared bats, including the very rare and endangered pond bat," says Monika Kasprzak.
Entry from June 1stThe first tourists will descend into the Orunia underground on June 1. There is little time for sightseeing, because last year the attraction closed on August 31. This place is also not available every day. Individual visits are only available on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at selected times. An entry ticket, which can be booked in advance online, costs PLN 20.
