Winnipeg Jets' NHL Record Winning Streak. They're the Best!
The match at the Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, watched by almost 14 thousand spectators, did not go according to plan for the hosts. Despite an overwhelming advantage (35-18 in shots on goal), it was the weakest team in the league that scored first - in the 16th minute, the Swede William Eklund took advantage of the power play and the Sharks led 1-0.
This score remained until the last minute of regulation time. With 26 seconds left, Josh Morrissey got to the puck in the visitors' defensive third and with a powerful shot into the "window" beat Czech Vitek Vanecek in the rivals' goal.
The Jets followed up with a 93-second overtime victory when Vanecek deflected the puck in front of him, and Mark Scheifele, who was on the way, poked it into the net from close range. The 31-year-old forward scored his 32nd goal of the season and 329th of his career, making him the club’s all-time leading scorer, passing Russian Ilya Kovalchuk.
The Winnipeg Jets are unrivaled"The atmosphere was incredible, the arena was shaking. The opposing goalkeeper stood on his head and was unbeatable for us for 59 and a half minutes. Winning in such circumstances is something special," admitted the scorer of the decisive goal.
The Winnipeg team has 85 points and is the best in both the Central Division, the Western Conference and the entire league. The Washington Capitals, who lead in the East, have a point less.
The Sharks, with 38 points, remain the weakest team in the tournament. "It was a great game from our side. It's a shame we couldn't keep the lead. But that's hockey. It doesn't matter if you're leading with 26 seconds to go or six, because anything can still happen," Vanecek summed up.
