Hubert Hurkacz couldn't stand the court in Rome. The strange fate of a Pole

One could be optimistic or optimistic about Thursday's quarterfinal in the capital of Italy. Hubert Hurkacz, coming to Rome, certainly wanted to secure a seeding for the Grand Slam Roland Garros. The Pole succeeded in this, ultimately making it to the quarterfinal, where he lost to exactly the same opponent as the year before.

Hubert Hurkacz – Tommy Paul. The Pole ran out of patience in Rome

The match itself lasted less than two hours. From the perspective of a Polish fan, the most excitement was in the opening set. The gentlemen played for a total of one hour and 16 minutes, and the American won, but only after a tie-break. What's more, Hurkacz even had 6:5 in the first set. Unfortunately, a double service fault in the eighth point of the tie-break (3:5) on the Pole's side turned out to be binding. Ultimately, "Hubi" lost 4:7 and had to attack his opponent from the perspective of a one-set deficit.

Paul, known for his solidity, was within the Pole's reach that day. However, Hurkacz made a lot of unforced errors, taking away his hopes of success. The final statistics of the match are shocking. Paul had 16 winners and 25 errors. The Pole? Hurkacz could have scored 23 points on the winning side, but he will give up 48 to his opponent. It is difficult to think of success with such a glaring number of errors.

What's good about Hurkacz? Certainly the first set, where both gentlemen built their points not only on strong serves, but also on exchanges of blows, longer actions. "Hubi" was able to attack both from the depth of the court and decide to take a shortcut just behind the net, surprising Paul.

Set number 2 may be worrying. A 6:3 victory for the American under great control. It started with 4:1, then 5:2 and the player from Wrocław had no time or space to make up for the losses. And even if he entered the exchange, he ended it with... more mistakes, most often throwing the balls beyond the end line.

WTA 1000 Rome: Three Polish players said goodbye to the tournament in the third round

The performance of Iga Świątek was an unpleasant surprise during the competition in the capital of Italy. The Pole certainly promised herself much more after playing on the courts in Rome. Świątek came to the Italian courts as the defending champion, as the vice-leader of the WTA ranking. And she left after a defeat in the third round, where the American Danielle Collins turned out to be better, and what's more - virtually already off the podium of the world lists .

At the same stage, Magdalena Fręch and Magda Linette said goodbye to the WTA 1000 tournament. The Polish singles players lost to much higher-ranked opponents. The player from Łódź (Fręch) was unable to cope with the Chinese Qinwen Zheng – who later defeated Aryna Sabalenka in Rome. In the case of the player from Poznań (Linette), it ended with a loss to Coco Gauff. The American will soon be the new number 2 in the WTA ranking.
