The group stage of the Men's Volleyball World Championships is behind us, and it brought many surprises. Many favorites have been eliminated, including France, Japan, and Brazil. Poland, Italy, Bulgaria, and the United States, among others, are still in contention. Will there be more surprises in the knockout stages?

The Volleyball World Cup, held since 1949, is being held in the Philippines for the first time. This is the most exotic location yet, although Brazil previously hosted the tournament twice, in 1960 and 1990, and Mexico once in 1974. Volleyball has competed in Asia twice, in Japan in 1998 and 2006.
Italy is the defending champion, having defeated Poland 3-1 in the 2022 World Cup final at the Spodek Arena in Katowice. The Polish national team has won the World Cup three times – in 1974, 2014, and 2018. In 2006, Poland won silver medals under Raul Lozano, losing to Brazil in the final.
The 2025 Men's Volleyball World Championship in the Philippines will run until September 28.
