The Sejm has elected Marian Banaś's successor. Who is the new head of the Supreme Audit Office?
On August 30, the six-year term of Marian Banaś, President of the Supreme Audit Office, expired. Two candidates were put forward to succeed him. The Law and Justice party (PiS) proposed its former MP, Tadeusz Dziuba, who until recently served as Vice-President of the Supreme Audit Office (NIK). The second candidate, Mariusz Haładyj, was nominated by Sejm Speaker Szymon Hołownia. Unexpectedly, even before the vote, PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński announced that, following a conversation with Dziuba, he had been authorized to withdraw his candidacy. 421 MPs voted in favor of Haładyj, only four voted against, and six abstained.
Mariusz Haładyj is a legal advisorMariusz Haładyj (born 1978) graduated with a law degree from the Faculty of Law, Canon Law, and Administration of the Catholic University of Lublin and completed postgraduate studies in corporate law at the University of Warsaw. He completed legal counsel training at the Warsaw Bar Association and auditor training at the Supreme Audit Office.
From 2002, he practiced law at a law firm and from 2003 at the Supreme Audit Office. In 2006, he completed an internship at the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Poland to the European Union in Brussels in the Economic Relations Department. He was a member of the Polish Financial Supervision Authority (KNF) and deputy chairman of the Main Adjudicating Committee on Public Finance Discipline. For seven years, he served as Undersecretary of State in the Ministries of Economic Affairs, responsible for economic regulations and regulatory impact assessments.
On February 5, 2019, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki appointed him President of the General Counsel to the Polish Republic. This institution safeguards the rights and interests of the Republic of Poland, including the State Treasury and state property. Its primary responsibilities include providing legal representation and advising the State Treasury and state legal entities. The Office handles important court cases, issues legal opinions, and represents Poland in international affairs and participates in mediation.
