Donald Trump has joined TikTok and no longer sees it as a threat. He will extend the sale deadline.
Donald Trump's cabinet on Tuesday joined the TikTok app , which he has repeatedly accused in the past of ties to the Chinese government and discouraged Americans from using it for security reasons. However, the US president has clearly changed his stance on the platform in recent days.
During a Friday call with reporters, he dismissed concerns raised by both Republicans and Democrats about the potential threats posed by the Chinese app. Asked if he was concerned about his privacy or national security, Trump replied: "I really don't. I think it's greatly exaggerated... I'm a fan of TikTok."
US President Donald Trump: I have serious American buyers for TikTokThe US president added that his administration will monitor the platform for any issues. However, a 2024 law requiring Chinese company ByteDance to divest TikTok's US assets or cease operations in the US remains in effect. The original deadline of January 19 of this year was repeatedly postponed by the Trump administration , most recently extending it to September 17.
Trump said Friday that he already has "very serious American buyers" interested in buying TikTok , though he didn't name any individuals or companies. He did say, however, that he could extend the deadline further if necessary.
Trump also admitted that he had not yet discussed the matter with Chinese President Xi Jinping. "In the meantime, until these complicated matters are resolved, we will simply prolong this a little longer," he declared. He added that he would speak with the Chinese leader "at the appropriate time."
