For many, morning coffee is a daily ritual without which they can't imagine starting their day. However, it's important to remember that some medications and preparations should not be taken with a cup of this beverage. This can result in poor absorption of the active ingredients.
Extensive research shows that coffee significantly affects the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of many medications. Caffeine should not be combined with medications such as cold and allergy medications, as this can lead to anxiety and difficulty falling asleep.
These medications cannot be combined with coffee:
- Thyroid medications – caffeine can reduce the amount of medication absorbed by the body, making it less effective. It's best to consider a break between drinking coffee and taking your medication.
- cold and allergy medications – they most often contain pseudoephedrine, so drinking coffee may lead to anxiety and difficulty falling asleep;
- diabetes medications – combining them with coffee with sugar or milk can cause a spike in blood sugar levels and also increase insulin levels;
- Alzheimer's medications – caffeine can tighten the blood-brain barrier, which may reduce the amount of medication reaching the brain;
- asthma medications – caffeine may increase side effects such as headaches, anxiety, stomach pain and irritability;
- osteoporosis medications – according to recommendations, it is better to take them before eating or drinking and with water, because drinking coffee can reduce the effectiveness of the medications by more than half;
- antidepressants – these may exacerbate typical side effects of caffeine, such as insomnia and heart palpitations;
- antipsychotic drugs - many of them are metabolized or broken down by the body in a different way in the presence of coffee;
- blood pressure medications – also in this case, taking them with coffee may cause the body to absorb a smaller amount of the medication, which may not work fully;
- Sleeping pills —caffeine—act in exactly the opposite way to melatonin, increasing alertness and making it harder to fall asleep. Combining them means they cancel each other out.
