Mining hegemon with lower coal production

China's coal production in July 2025 fell to its lowest level since April 2024. This is the first recorded year-on-year decline in 2025. This is a signal that China's coal production may be falling in response to oversupply.
As Reuters points out, China produced 380.99 million tonnes of coal in July, a 3.8% drop compared to the previous year.
Production in the first seven months of the year reached 2.78 billion metric tons, a 3.8% year-on-year increase.
Analysts have been closely monitoring whether China will take steps to curb the oversupply. Time will tell whether supply could become more constrained in the second half of 2025.
