Dave Ball, co-founder of the legendary synth-pop band Soft Cell, has died at the age of 66. In August, the band played for the last time to a crowd of 20,000 at The Rewind festival in Henley-on-Thames. In recent months, the group recorded a new album.

Soft Cell is best known to the masses for their 1981 hit "Tainted Love." It was Ball who decided to record and rearrange Gloria Jones's forgotten 1964 track. Years later, "Tainted Love" was revived as a tribute to Soft Cell, this time thanks to Marilyn Manson. Soft Cell's music has also been covered by Nine Inch Nails.

Soft Cell's Dave Ball Has Died. He Was 66

"Electronic music pioneer Dave Ball, one half of the groundbreaking electronic music duo Soft Cell and the successful acid house band The Grid, died peacefully in his sleep at his London home on Wednesday 22 October," his family said in a statement.

" A wonderfully brilliant musical genius . Thank you, Dave, for being such an important part of my life and for the music you gave me. I wouldn't be where I am today if it weren't for you," said Marc Almond, the other half of the Soft Cell duo.

The band has returned to touring and recorded a new album. "This news is such a shock to me."

Dave Ball left shortly after Soft Cell resumed activity. The band had been back on tour in recent months and had even recorded new material . "In recent months, I've never seen Dave so prolific, so invigorated, and so energized about the future, which is why this news comes as such a shock. Both he and Marc were very excited about the new Soft Cell album, which was completed just a few days ago," said manager Chris Smith.

Dave Ball formed Soft Cell in Leeds, UK, in 1978, at the age of just 19. Their debut album, "Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret," went platinum in the UK and Canada. Hits like "Tainted Love," "Say Hello," and "Wave Goodbye" topped the UK charts. Soft Cell has sold over 10 million records worldwide.
