The Open Museum Seminars were inaugurated at the National Museum in Szczecin – Museum of Regional Traditions (ul. Staromłyńska 27). The first meeting was devoted to the history and heritage of the Society of Pomeranian History and Antiquities.
The idea of the seminars is to organize cyclical meetings aimed at popularizing knowledge in the field of culture, contemporary trends in museums, conservation of monuments and scientific research related to museum activities in the form of lectures, presentations, talks and speeches by representatives of the world of culture and science, often enriched with papers and joint discussions, exchange of information and views with the participants.
The subject of the first seminar was the heritage of the Society of Pomeranian History and Antiquities (Gesellschaft für pommersche Geschichte und Altertumskunde) – an organisation established 200 years ago, whose activities had a fundamental influence on establishing the foundations for the protection of monuments in the region, and also initiated the accumulation of the Pomeranian museum collection.
Two papers were presented during the meeting: Dr. Hab. Maciej Szukała's "Files of the Society of Pomeranian History and Antiquities in the resources of the State Archives in Szczecin" and Krzysztof Kowalski's - "Legacy of the activities of the Society of Pomeranian History and Antiquities in the National Museum in Szczecin".
Maciej Szukała presented the history of the Society of Pomeranian History and Antiquities, but above all discussed the archival resources located in the Szczecin archives – including the organization's statute, files concerning the Society's authorities, but also press materials describing its activities, letters, iconographic sources and obituaries of deceased members. He enriched his lecture with a presentation of selected sources on the history of the Society of Pomeranian History and Antiquities.
Krzysztof Kowalski’s paper supplemented the subject matter by referring to the documents of the Society of Pomeranian History and Antiquities available in the resources of the National Museum in Szczecin.
The meeting was led by Dr. Anna B. Kowalska from the Department of Archaeology of the National Museum in Szczecin.
