Extreme heat - how to protect yourself from the dangerous heat wave

According to IMGW forecasts, the most difficult situation will occur in western Poland, but Thursday will be hot almost everywhere. The heat will reach 32-36°C, and in places it may be even warmer. In the Lower Silesian province, the temperature will reach around 33-35°C.
Threat to health and life
High temperatures lead to dehydration, weakness, and in extreme cases, heatstroke. Particularly at risk are seniors, children, and people who do physical work, such as farmers, for whom summer is a time of intensive harvesting.
As Cezary Nobis, director of the KRUS Prevention Office, reminds: "You need to protect yourself from the sun, hydrate yourself properly, wear light, airy clothing, cover your head and use creams with a UV filter," we read in the official KRUS announcement.
- Avoid the sun between 11am and 5pm – this is the hottest time of day. Stay in the shade or indoors if possible. If you have to go out, wear a hat, sunglasses and protect your skin with sunscreen.
- Drink water regularly – don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Thirst is a sign that your body is already dehydrated. It’s best to drink in small sips throughout the day. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks.
- Don't leave children or animals in the car - even a few minutes in a hot car can end in tragedy. The temperature inside the vehicle can rise to 60°C.
- Cool your body – use cold compresses, soak your wrists and neck in cool water. Ventilate your home at night, cover your windows during the day.
- Take care of seniors and neighbors – the elderly often do not feel thirsty and dehydrate more quickly. Call your grandmother, your neighbor – ask if they have water and shelter from the sun.
- Take care of your pets – provide them with fresh water and a shady spot. Don't walk your dog during the hottest times – hot asphalt can burn its paws.
According to KRUS, people working outdoors should take breaks in the shade, preferably under a roof or trees.
You should drink plenty of water, avoid fatty and heavy foods, and choose vegetables and fruits rich in electrolytes. During work
You should also listen to your body – if you feel weak, dizzy or have chills, you should stop working and rest in a cool place.
Symptoms of overheating include facial flushing, dizziness, rapid pulse, nausea, and fainting. In such a situation, you should act immediately: move the person to a cool place, give them water, and cool the body. If necessary, call for help: 112.
