The Łódź justice system is in mourning after the loss of an outstanding judge. Jarosław Papis, known for his work at the Court of Appeal in Łódź, died on Sunday, February 23, after a long battle with a serious illness. He was 63 years old.
Judge Papis was a highly respected figure in the legal community and his professional career was filled with high-profile cases.
Judge Jarosław Papis sentenced the "skin hunters" and the "beasts of Lumumbowo" in the trialsHis involvement in criminal trials, such as the so-called skin hunters affair (where emergency room workers used the drug Pavulon to kill patients for financial gain), brought him notoriety. Judge Papis sentenced the main defendant, paramedic Andrzej N., to life imprisonment for the murder of four patients.
His name is also associated with other significant trials that shocked public opinion. He ruled in the case of the so-called Łódź octopus and the horrific crime of a man known as the " beast of Lumumba ". In the latter, Judge Papis sentenced the bodyguard Mirosław Ż., who brutally raped and murdered a young student and then hid in Russia for years.
Before taking up his position at the Court of Appeal , Jarosław Papis adjudicated at the District Court in Łódź, where for some time he also served as a press spokesman.
The judge died after a long illness.
