A long black weekend. "It's never been so tragic."

Police statistics are merciless.
The first two days of the long weekend brought a dramatic toll. On Friday, police recorded 88 road accidents, resulting in 21 deaths. Saturday ended with another 84 incidents and five fatalities. This brings the total to 172 accidents and 26 fatalities. Over these two days alone, officers apprehended over 800 drunk drivers.
The most tragic eventsIn the Mazovian town of Stary Kiełbów, a passenger car collided with a motorcycle. The accident claimed the lives of the 40-year-old motorcyclist and the 59-year-old passenger in the Nissan. The 62-year-old driver was sober and taken to hospital.
In Krakow, on the night from Friday to Saturday, a motorcyclist veered off the road and struck a barrier. Despite receiving first aid, he died. That same day, another tragedy struck the city: a 28-year-old woman was struck by a car while crossing a busy street in a prohibited area and died instantly. Police determined she was under the influence of alcohol.
In Warmia and Mazury on Friday evening, an Audi driver rear-ended a Skoda that was traveling at the right speed. The passengers, a 37-year-old volunteer firefighter and his 2-year-old son, died. The woman driving the Skoda was taken to hospital in serious condition.
Police appeal for vigilancePolice are warning that Sunday could bring further dangers – it's the day people return from the long weekend. Officers are urging drivers to be cautious and considerate.
By comparison, last year during the same period, there were 230 accidents, resulting in 21 deaths and 265 injuries. During that time, police apprehended nearly 1,500 drunk drivers.
Not just road accidents. Four drownings – in Masovia alone.Tragic road accidents aren't the only causes of lives ending abruptly. According to Deputy Inspector Katarzyna Kucharska, spokeswoman for the Masovian Police, since the beginning of the weekend, four drownings have been reported in Masovia alone. The victims are mostly young men.
"Mazovia hasn't seen such a tragic weekend in a long time. Authorities have repeatedly conducted searches for people who entered the water and didn't resurface. Unfortunately, such searches usually end with the discovery of a body," the policewoman said.
