"There's not much milk and honey." Former finance minister on the Polish economy

- There is not much of either milk or honey, and for many it is still not enough. I am first and foremost an economist, not a politician, and I know that there will always be indicators that show the good sides of reality, which on balance is not so perfect - said former Minister of Finance Grzegorz W. Kołodko in the context of the ruling camp's statement on the Polish economy.
Asked by Marcin Fijołek in "Graffiti" about the optimistic statements of government members regarding the current economic situation in Poland, Grzegorz W. Kołodko denied that they largely corresponded with reality.
- On balance, this economic situation is not that good, and it seems to me that the government has difficulty controlling some issues. Maybe it is because we are in the middle of a permanent election campaign, the previous one had barely ended and this government was formed, and then the most important thing was to remove that formation from power - the economist argued.
Grzegorz W. Kołodko predicts a change in the government's narrative. "It will probably make moves that seem unpopular"The former finance minister pointed out that critics - even those sympathetic to the government - point to several serious problems facing the Polish economy. Among them, he mentioned the lowest level of spending on research and development in the European Union, which he assessed as "a lever of development in the long term."
In addition, Kołodko drew attention to one of the highest levels of budget deficit and a very low level of competitiveness of the Polish economy in comparison with other highly developed countries.
However, Kołodko stated that if Rafał Trzaskowski wins the upcoming elections, the government will decide to move away from the current narrative and take more bold actions in economic matters.
- I have no doubt that if the candidate of the ruling coalition wins, the government and the prime minister personally will change the tone of their statements and make certain structural and institutional moves in economic policy that seem to be unpopular - said the former minister.
