Are you struggling with unwanted, overgrown plants ? Using old cardboard can be a solution! By covering your border with wet (ink-free) cardboard, you block the light from seedlings and seeds of " weeds ," thus suppressing them.
Then apply a layer of mulch made from peat-free compost or garden soil and plant it. The cardboard will dissolve naturally over time and, together with the compost, enrich your soil.

Now is the perfect time to plant, and also to take winter cuttings from many plant varieties! This method allows you to grow many extra woody plants for free. It's fun and saves money.
Do you have any large, old plastic bottles left over? With this tip from the special edition "185 Budget Ideas for an Ideal Garden," you can create handy herb containers that require minimal maintenance. Just gather an empty bottle (2 liters), scissors, and jute twine.
- Cut the bottle in half with the scissors
- Take the jute rope and cut it to about 50 cm. Make a loop and tie the ends together at about 15 cm.
- Poke a hole in the bottle cap and thread the loop through from the inside, leaving the knot on the inside of the cap. Screw the cap onto the bottle.
- Fill the bottom of the bottle halfway with water. Push the top of the bottle into the bottom, so that the rope and cap are below the water's surface.
- Now fill the inverted top with soil and plant or sow your herbs in it. Water once more from the top. Refill the water reservoir when it sinks too low. The string ensures that the soil stays constantly moist.
Tip! Place the whole thing in a nicer pot or fold something else around it to hide the plastic.
