SAN ISIDRO (ANP/DPA) - The criminal trial against the medical team of Argentine football legend Diego Maradona has failed and must be reopened. Because a judge from the three-person panel withdrew from the case after requests for disqualification, the procedure must now be reopened. The trial was declared null and void by the two remaining judges, Argentine media report.

Judge Julieta Makintach resigned Tuesday after violating ethics rules. Footage emerged of her being interviewed by a camera crew in the corridors of the Buenos Aires courthouse and in her office. The court prohibits interviews with a judge during a trial.

Maradona died on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60 in a private home north of Buenos Aires, a few weeks after undergoing brain surgery. According to investigators, serious mistakes were made in home care. Maradona was in poor health.

Seven of Maradona's doctors and nurses have been on trial in San Isidro since March. The Public Prosecutor's Office accuses Maradona's personal doctor, Leopoldo Luque, his psychiatrist, Agustina Cosachov, a psychologist, another doctor, the medical coordinator of the health insurance company and two nurses of manslaughter. All the suspects deny the charges. If convicted, they face up to 25 years in prison.
