The academic year is starting again, and that means many students are looking for a new laptop. WANT editor-in-chief Jeroen Kraak shares his ideal choice.

As a student, finding a new laptop can be quite a challenge. You want to be able to do as much as possible, but at the same time, it shouldn't cost too much and should also be easy to take to school or university.

One of the best options that seems to have everything is the Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (2025). It weighs 1.24 kilos and is therefore easy to carry in your (back)bag.

With an 18-hour battery life, you don't have to worry about being stuck in a classroom without a power outlet. In fact, it's also ideal for working in the library or simply relaxing on a patio in the sunshine.

The MacBook is also perfectly suited for students in terms of performance. It features the Apple M4 chip, one of the fastest on the market. You also get 16GB of RAM.

With this power, it's suitable for almost any student. The M4 MacBook Air even allows for Photoshop and editing. Only if you're enrolled in a serious graphic design program where you need to create complex study projects would you be better off purchasing a more powerful model.

The Retina display is also high-quality, making it perfect for watching a Netflix series during your break. The MacBook is also becoming increasingly suitable for gaming. The M4 chip, for example, allows you to play games like Death Stranding and Cyberpunk 2077 with ease.

The M4 MacBook Air normally costs €1199, but now you can get it for just €949 . Students get an additional €50 discount, bringing the price down to €899, €300 below the asking price.

For that price, you get a laptop that's perfectly suitable for your studies. And the great thing is that MacBooks really do last for years. For example, I have an Air that I still use occasionally after eight years. Sure, it's not as fast as it used to be, but it's still a great addition. However, it performs brilliantly throughout your entire study period.
