Iga Światek has won Wimbledon for the first time in her career. The 24-year-old Polish tennis player defeated American Amanda Anisimova in a one-sided final: 6-0, 6-0. This was the first time in the professional era since 1968 that a tennis player had won a final without losing a game.
This is Swiatek's sixth Grand Slam title. The Polish player won four of her previous five titles at Roland Garros. It's the first title in 2025 for Swiatek, who was long the world number one but has slipped to fourth. At Wimbledon, the Polish player was seeded eighth.
The Wimbledon final was a first for both Swiatek and Anisimova. Swiatek had not advanced beyond the quarterfinals in previous years. Anisimova also reached the quarterfinals on the London grass in 2022. The American did not participate in the two subsequent editions. In the semifinal last Thursday, the world number 12 surprised Aryna Sabalenka in a long three-setter, reaching the final of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time.
6-0 after 25 minutesAnisimova couldn't match Sabalenka's performance in the final on Centre Court in London. She quickly found herself two breaks down. After 25 minutes, Swiatek had won the first set 6-0. Anisimova won only nine points in the entire first set.
In the second set, Swiatek was also relentless on break points. On the American's first and third serves, she immediately won the first break point. In the second serve, she did so on the third break point. Anisimova tried, but often saw the ball just go out of bounds. After 58 minutes, the Polish woman served out the match on her second match point. Tennis icon Billie Jean King, who sat in the stands next to Princess Catherine, won 6-0, 6-1 against Australian Evonne Goolagong in 1975.
