From a lick of mascara to a touch of blush, it's a staple in many women's beauty routines. But what many women don't realize is that these products can be harmful to their health. Some cosmetics can significantly increase the risk of developing asthma later in life, according to new research.
The study, conducted by the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, examined the health of 40,000 women. Their health data was collected over a 12-year period and was based on the use of 41 different beauty products.
By the end of the study period, 1,774 women—approximately 4 percent—had developed asthma later in life. These women often used the same cosmetic products, namely artificial nails, cuticle cream, blush, and lipstick. According to the researchers, women who use these products have a 47 percent higher risk of being diagnosed with asthma.
Simply using blush and lipstick five or more times a week increased the risk of asthma by 18 percent. According to the researchers, the study's findings don't prove that the products themselves cause the increased risk, but rather that the commonly used chemicals in these products can have an effect. Some of these chemicals are thought to weaken the immune system, while others—such as polyfluoroalkyl substances (also known as PFAs), parabens , phthalates, and phenols—can disrupt hormone balance .
"Our findings underscore once again the importance of regulating personal care products and their ingredients," emphasizes one of the researchers. Previously, it had also emerged that the use of gel nail polish can be dangerous. People who regularly use gel nail polish can develop an allergy to the acrylates. And this allergy could cause problems in the future with medical procedures involving acrylates, such as dentures or hip replacements.
