American R&B and soul singer Roberta Flack, known for the number 1 hits 'Killing Me Softly With His Song' and 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face', died on Monday at the age of 88. This was announced by her management, according to international press agencies and American media. Flack announced in 2022 that she would stop singing because she had the disease ALS.
Flack wasn't the first singer to sing "Killing Me Softly With His Song," but she was the first to make it a number one hit. The song was originally written for Lori Lieberman in the early 1970s. However, when Roberta Flack released the song in 1973, it became a worldwide hit. Flack won a Grammy for her version. Later, 'Killing Me Softly' has been covered by many artists, including Lauryn Hill of The Fugees in the 1990s.
The classically trained singer and pianist came to prominence late in life, when her version of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" was used by Clint Eastwood in the soundtrack of his 1971 film Play Misty for Me .
The song "Feel Like Makin' Love" was originally released by Flack in 1974 and later covered by many R&B and pop artists, including D'Angelo and Roy Ayers.
“She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family,” Flack’s management said in a statement. “Roberta broke boundaries and records.”
