The medieval village of Murcia located on a hill and in the middle of an impressive landscape

The same thing happens in Murcia as in other Spanish towns: its wonderful beaches are well-known , while the inland areas, despite their great attractions, often remain in the background. That's why we don't want you to miss Aledo , a town where you can enjoy history and nature, and where once a year something happens that you won't see anywhere else in our country: its medieval town center is transformed, illuminated by thousands of candles, revealing its most medieval and magical essence.
The most important monument in AledoAs soon as we enter this medieval town, the first thing that stands out is the Keep, the best example of the power that Aledo wielded throughout this territory. To give an idea, suffice it to say that due to its strategic location, the Muslim and Christian kingdoms fought over it for centuries. The tower is located in the middle of the old military compound and reflects the construction patterns of 15th century military architecture.
The medieval historic centerGet ready to walk through its steep cobblestone streets, where important pages of our history were written. During the walk, in addition to the remains of Aledo Castle, of which part of the wall and the Tower of Homage (or Calahorra) are preserved, you will come across another notable monument: the Church of Santa María la Real (16th century) . You will also find several viewpoints where you can stop and enjoy the relaxing surroundings. The most notable is the Puerta de las Tradiciones, where you can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the Guadalentín Valley.
Aledo's Sleepless NightAnd if you thought the town was beautiful, there's one night a year when its beauty is multiplied, transforming it into a place filled with magic. This happens in August, during the Noche en Vela (Clock Night), when the historic center of Aledo is illuminated solely by thousands of candles and torches, recapturing its medieval essence. A true spectacle you won't see anywhere else in Spain.
A unique natural jewelThe Torre del Homenaje (Keep Tower) isn't the only treasure that has led this town to be declared a Site of Cultural Interest. Another of Aledo's great attractions is a gorge of eroded, reddish rock that water has been carving out of the limestone for thousands of years, reminiscent of the Grand Canyon of Colorado. The Estrecho de la Arboleja (or Agualeja) is the most important geological route in Murcia, and depending on the rainfall, pools and ponds can form within it. The hiking route runs through high vertical walls and winding paths and is very easy to follow, even with children.
