Neither Riazor nor Rodas: this is the beach with the warmest water in Galicia

Galicia is an exciting place for a summer vacation. The Galician coast combines breathtaking nature and charming little towns , as well as exquisite cuisine and a fascinating culture that make this region unique. However, it's not the best place in Spain to enjoy warm waters and spend hours swimming in the sea, as the Atlantic and Cantabrian Seas tend to have low temperatures... but not everywhere in the autonomous community.
While swimming on the Costa da Morte or in the Rías Baixas can sometimes be a challenge due to the icy waters, the truth is that the Cantabrian Sea reaches a slightly warmer area of Galicia, specifically the region of A Mariña Lucense. In this northern part of the province of Lugo, where sublime landscapes can be seen, the sea temperature is slightly higher than in other Galician areas .
Area beach, in Lugo, is the warmest in Galicia
The wonderful region of A Mariña Lucense is full of idyllic sandy beaches where you can relax, but if there's one that stands out, it's undoubtedly Area Beach. This immense stretch of sand, 1,150 meters long and almost 90 meters wide, is covered in fine, white sand, giving it an almost heavenly appearance. Located just four kilometers from the town of Viveiro, it is one of the most popular spots in the area.
In addition to being very easy to access and having all the necessary services, this spectacular Galician beach boasts of being the warmest in all of Galicia. According to data from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the temperatures of the Cantabrian waters that bathe the sand reach an average of 20°C in the summer season, a notable difference compared to other areas of the Galician coast.

Although the waters at Area Beach are still cooler than the idyllic sandy beaches along the Mediterranean Sea, they are still much warmer than other coastal areas in Galicia: for example, on the Costa da Morte, the Atlantic waters typically average around 16°C during the summer months.
Therefore, despite what many believe, it is possible to swim on the coasts of Galicia during the summer season and not freeze in the process. Area beach is the perfect place to avoid freezing temperatures while enjoying the fascinating surroundings of northern Spain.
