Tennis: Novak Djokovic, between the present at the US Open and a future as a coach

The Serbian, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, announced that he wants to coach João Fonseca after he retires from the professional circuit. Meanwhile, he's advancing at the US Open despite some physical setbacks.
Novak Djokovic continues to make his mark on and off the court. In the midst of his US Open campaign, the Serbian surprised everyone by revealing one of his plans for the future: to become the coach of young Brazilian João Fonseca, one of the tour's most promising players. However, with his characteristic humor, he clarified that it won't be cheap: "It's going to be a bit expensive, so get ready."
With 24 Grand Slam titles under his belt, Djokovic highlighted the potential of the 19-year-old tennis player , who closed the 2024 season among the top 150 in the rankings. In 2025, Fonseca made the big leap: he won his first ATP title in Buenos Aires and defeated Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open , consolidating his projection as one of the emerging figures on the circuit.

Meanwhile, Nole continues to compete. In his US Open debut, he defeated Learner Tien 6-1, 7-6 (3), 6-2, despite a painful blister on his right big toe that bothered him especially in the second set. “ I dropped my level and made a lot of unforced errors, but I managed to get back on track and close out the match well,” he explained.
Djokovic acknowledged he's not carrying any injuries, but he struggled to maintain intensity in long rallies. At 38, each point demands greater effort. "I'm not injured, but it's hard for me to recover after each long rally," he confessed. Still, he's confident in the two days of rest before his next match, although he remained cautious about his physical condition: "I hope I don't feel like I did in that second set again."
His opponent in the second round will be 22-year-old American Zachary Svajda.

In parallel to his sporting achievements, Djokovic also spoke about his emotional balance. In a recent interview on Jay Shetty's podcast, he highlighted the fundamental role of his wife, Jelena Ristic : "She's my rock. She's capable of telling me the things I don't want to hear. If I keep playing, it's because of the support she gives our family . She's the best partner in every way," said Nole.
