MEXICO CITY.- German athlete Laura Dahlmeier , who achieved many successes for her country at the highest level throughout her career, lost her life while mountaineering .
The two-time Olympic biathlon champion , who retired from the sport after the PyeongChang Winter Olympics , died in Pakistan while mountaineering.
According to local media reports, the accident occurred last Monday, at an altitude of approximately 5,700 meters, on Laila Peak.
The athlete, who became the first woman to achieve a double in sprint and pursuit at the same Winter Olympics , was with a teammate when she was hit by a sudden rockfall in the Hushe Valley.
The report adds that after the incident, work began on a recovery operation for the body , which was suspended after Laura Dahlmeier's wishes were made known, and she asked that her body be left on the mountain.
"Laura Dahlmeier expressly and in writing requested that, in a case like this, no one risk their life to recover her. It was her wish to leave her body on the mountain in this case. This also coincides with the wishes of her family," her loved ones said in a statement.
