The Attorney General's Office (FGR) requests the extradition of Sandra Lucía Téllez, co-owner of the ABC Daycare Center in Hermosillo.

MEXICO CITY (apro).- The Attorney General's Office (FGR) has requested the extradition of Sandra Lucía Téllez, co-owner of the ABC Daycare Center in Hermosillo, Sonora, who, according to the FGR, fled to the United States, violating the conditional release measure imposed by Mexican authorities.
Sixteen years after the fire at the ABC Daycare Center in Hermosillo, Sonora, the co-owner of the establishment was arrested last Saturday by police authorities in Arizona, United States. The fire at the daycare center claimed the lives of 49 children, including infants.
In response, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated at her morning press conference that her government will seek to complete the extradition process as quickly as possible.
"If extradition is necessary, we will obviously do so. What I'm not sure about is whether it has already been requested or if it is being requested," the Mexican president said.
According to activists from the Manos Unidas por Nuestros Niños collective, made up of mothers and fathers of the victims, the arrest was made possible thanks to a red notice issued by Interpol, based on an arrest warrant in force since 2022.
In response, the Attorney General's Office clarified that it had taken the necessary steps for the extradition, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), since 2024.
"In this regard, since September 2024, the Attorney General's Office (FGR), through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has been seeking provisional detention for the extradition of said individual. This resulted in his arrest in Tucson, Arizona, by United States authorities, who set October 8 of this year as the date for the corresponding hearing," the Mexican justice agency stated.
Mexican authorities are awaiting the outcome of the hearing scheduled for U.S. territory in order to secure extradition.
