Inegi reports the unemployment rate for April

The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) reported this Friday that The unemployment rate in Mexico reached 2.5% of the Economically Active Population (EAP) last April. The unemployment rate is lower than the 2.6% rate for the same month in 2024 , although it is higher than the 2.2% rate from last March , the autonomous agency stated in its report.

The unemployed population was 1.6 million people, and the Unemployment Rate (UR) was 2.5% of the EAP . Compared to April 2024, the unemployment population decreased by 43,000 people, and the UR was lower by 0.1 percentage points, the Institute detailed.

The EAP in the fourth month of the year reached 61.5 million people aged 15 and over , representing a participation rate of 59.4% and a working population 45,000 higher than that of April 2024.

From the EAP, 59.9 million people were employed during April, 88 thousand more than in the same month a year earlier. .

The underemployed people - those who declared having the need and availability to work more hours - were 4.3 million, 7.1% of the employed population , a decrease of 346 thousand people before April 2024.

By sectors and informality

Informal workers in April totaled 32.7 million , increasing the informality rate to 54.7% .

The employed population by sector of activity was distributed with 43.9% of the total in services , in trade 20% , in manufacturing 16.5% , in agricultural activities 10.4% and in construction 7.8 % .

While in " other economic activities ", which include mining, electricity, water and gas supply, was occupied by 0.6% , and another 0.8% did not specify an activity .

By gender, the Female EAP In April it was 24.3 million and the male of 35.6 million , with a participation rate of 45.4% among women of working age and 75.2% among men.

The figures reflect Mexico's economic performance, which grew 0.2% in the first quarter of the year , despite warnings of recession due to trade uncertainty in the United States and after the 1.5% growth in Gross Domestic Product in 2024 .
