The Mercado de los Carruajes, a gourmet icon of Buenos Aires, has closed: what will it become?

The Carriage Market , located in the heart of downtown Buenos Aires , closed its doors permanently in April after months of low commercial activity. Reopening in 2022 as a gastronomic hub, the project failed to sustain itself and will now be converted into a space for social events.

The location, which had more than 40 commercial spaces , had been practically empty in recent months. During peak hours, only a few stores remained open, but with low traffic. The situation foreshadowed its definitive closure , despite the fact that the dealership has a multi-million-dollar contract with the City until 2027 .

The building, located at Alem 852, was originally inaugurated in 1900 and housed the presidential carriages. In recent years, it underwent a restoration process that included the enhancement of original elements such as stained glass, wood, bronze, majolica, and the façade. The work respected its Italian architectural style, the work of architect Emilio Agrelo.
