The Burning of Bad Mood marks the beginning of the Mérida Carnival 2025

“Goodbye to anger and welcome to joy!” proclaimed Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada and the sovereigns of the Mérida Carnival at the Burning of Bad Mood, last night in front of the Municipal Palace .

This activity formally inaugurated the 2025 “Amazonian” Mérida Carnival . All the festival’s sovereigns and Mariana Villamil Rodríguez , executive secretary of the Carnival’s Permanent Committee, were on stage.

The mayor sent a message in which she asked if “are we ready to burn off the bad mood and start the party for the people of Merida?” The answer was: “Yes!”

The mayor thanked the kings for their enthusiasm, joy and commitment, as well as the team of the Permanent Committee.

“Mérida is proud to have an innovative, safe and inclusive Carnival, which offers more and better events, which not only promote this wonderful festival but also tourist attractions and care for the environment.”

"This Amazonian festival calls on us to remember the importance of caring for the environment and protecting animals," he stressed.

He added that a safe and clean Carnival was guaranteed, with the participation of 3,400 security agents. He also recalled that there would be a new route in Carnival City to bring services closer to those attending the parades.

King Julia Rivero Sáenz and Queen Oscar Pereira Herrera read the order for the Burning of Bad Mood.

“On behalf of all the 2025 sovereigns, we read the Carnival proclamation, which decrees: May joy reign in Mérida and any bad mood be left aside! May every family, every girl, boy, young people, adults and seniors flood this festival with color with their costumes and enthusiasm! May our comparsas, with more than 900 participants, be the protagonists of a competition full of talent and creativity!” they said.

“Let innovation continue to surprise with canine kings and acrobatic shows in a circus without animals, reaffirming our commitment to sustainability and inclusion!”

“ May the magic of the Amazon rainforest inspire every corner of Ciudad Carnaval and may the warmth of every Merida resident transform this meeting into an unforgettable experience! We are ready to spread joy and flavor to every corner of Mérida! Let the party begin, let the celebration begin and ignite the spirit of the Amazon Carnival 2025!”

The ceremony concluded with fireworks.

Hundreds of people attended the evening, most of them wanting to enjoy the performance by María León and Yahir , which began at 9 a.m. Several spectators arrived hours before to be in the front row.

The sovereigns of the carnival are also Mariana Puerto Ic and Cabillo Junior Aranda Poot, juveniles; Samia Hernández Ávila and Matías Campos Ongay, children; Yeydi Pacheco Medina and Adán Ramírez Couoh, with intellectual disabilities; Geisell Valdez González and Tomás Guicho Ochoa, with motor disabilities, and Lilia Muñoz Contreras and Rubén Meza Manzanilla, of the elderly.
