Sheinbaum talks about change to law vs. nepotism: 'I hope Morena doesn't put relatives in 2027'

“Politics is about choosing between inconveniences,” said President Claudia Sheinbaum when addressing the change made to her proposal to ban nepotism in public office .

The initiative that Claudia Sheinbaum sent to Congress established that no family member can immediately succeed another in an elected position starting with the 2027 midterm elections, in which 15 governorships will be renewed.

“We have a three-party alliance and what they are looking for is to approve a reform. If it is not approved, a scheme is sought in which it can be approved. The other option is that if it had not been approved , then let's go to 2030 so that it is included in the Constitution,” he declared.

Questioned about the Green Party's attitude to modifying the law against nepotism, the president of Mexico warned that the people "will see it badly" if a party puts forward the relative of a governor as a candidate in 2027.

"I don't think that the people of San Luis Potosí, or of any state in the Republic, would like to see a relative be chosen as a candidate. We presented the proposal precisely for that reason," he said.

Sheinbaum stressed that she hopes that Morena does not put forward any relative of a public servant as a candidate in 2027. On the subject, Félix Salgado Macedonio, father of Evelyn Salgado , governor of Guerrero, has said that he will seek to run for the position.

"What we have achieved is that it will be from 2030 onwards and it is the political agreement that could be reached," he said.

The initiative will now go to the Chamber of Deputies, where Morena, the Green Party and the Labor Party have a qualified majority to approve it.
