Scared and cold, he huddled in an elevator until someone noticed he needed help.

When she received the message, her heart broke . A railway worker had warned about an animal huddled in the corner of a cold elevator. And, worst of all, throughout the day, no one had stopped to help him.

“I can’t imagine how many times the elevator went up to the second floor and came back down while he just sat there, scared and cold ,” Suzette Hall, founder of Logan’s Legacy 29, a group of people who rescue at-risk animals, wrote in a Facebook post, and immediately rallied around helping the brown-furred, sad-eyed dog.

Although the railway was open to the public, that particular elevator was reserved for staff only. Normally, passengers could only access the elevator with a special pass, but the dog seemed to slip through the doors without a pass, likely looking for shelter and some food.

Fortunately, someone had refused to ignore the frightened animal and called for help. Mary Nakiso, a volunteer at Logan's Legacy 29, rushed to the scene, where a sympathetic employee let her into the elevator. And when the doors finally opened, her heart broke even more than when she learned of the animal's plight.

“As soon as they pushed the elevator door, he got really scared , sitting in that little corner.” The train employee held the elevator doors open while Nakiso quickly picked up the dog, wrapped in a blanket. Through the rain, he ran with the animal in his arms to his car, where they finally had their first formal meeting.

Clay's journey, as the newly rescued boy was named, toward the life he deserved was far from over, as he still needed a medical checkup and a foster home to recover from what he'd been through. But as soon as he was in Nakiso's car, Clay seemed completely relieved to no longer be in the elevator.

“This sweet baby snuggled up in a blanket and fell fast asleep . He was now safe, warm, and out of that elevator where he had remained invisible.”

That same day, Clay successfully passed his medical checkup and headed to the home where Rebecca Taylor, another volunteer, would transition him. As they searched for his perfect forever home, Taylor happily watched as Clay adapted to his new life and friends.

Clay is doing great in his foster home ,” Taylor wrote in a Facebook comment. “He’s very sweet and gets along wonderfully with my two daughters (ages 6 and 8) and also my dog. He’s going to make someone very happy.”

Taylor realized Clay would be the perfect dog for the family, and a few weeks later, all her dreams came true when Clay was officially adopted . It's been two months since his rescue, and Clay is doing better than ever. From being a stowaway forgotten in an elevator, he's now living the life he always deserved, with love, cuddles, and a home where he's happy.
