Merchants in Progreso report low sales despite cruise ship arrival
PROGRESO.- The Carnival Valor cruise ship arrived this Tuesday at the port of Progreso , with a total of 4,294 visitors on board, however, the influx of tourists who disembarked and stayed was noticeably low, limiting commercial activity in the area.
The vessel, coming from Cozumel , arrived at 7:55 a.m. with 3,166 passengers and 1,128 crew members.
The Carnival Valor is scheduled to depart at 4:00 p.m. bound for New Orleans .
Despite the considerable number of visitors on board, it is estimated that only about 300 tourists decided to disembark and walk along the traditional boardwalk of Progreso , the influx on the international boardwalk was even smaller.

The few visitors who chose to stay in the port enjoyed a day at the beach, strolling along the sand, swimming in the sea , and consuming food and drinks in local restaurants and shops.
The low influx of tourists has caused concern among merchants and service providers in the area, who have reported little economic benefit .
“We expected more people… sales have been very low today,” said a crafts vendor on the traditional boardwalk.
On the traditional boardwalk, Progreso Public Services personnel could be seen carrying out cleaning work.

The workers were busy removing the sand that had accumulated on the pedestrian walkway due to the effects of the last two cold fronts that hit the region.
The aim of this work is to improve the image of the boardwalk and offer a better space for visitors to enjoy .
As usual, a large number of passengers who arrived on the cruise chose to take excursions to other tourist spots in Yucatan , such as Merida , Chichen Itza or some cenotes .
The arrival of cruise ships is expected to bring a greater influx of tourists to Progreso, which would boost commercial activity and benefit local service providers.
