Lawmakers issue a position on security in Torreón after police protests

Federal Representative Guillermo Anaya Llamas considered that the State's intervention in the security conflict that erupted yesterday in this city must be for the good of the community, and he called for addressing differences through institutional channels and prioritizing dialogue between authorities.

"We must not allow even one step backward. Peace and tranquility in Coahuila and Torreón have been hard to achieve; we cannot allow everything that has been achieved and that society treasures, which is peace and tranquility, to slip through our fingers," he emphasized. Given this, it is important to use all political tools for the good of the citizens, because "crime sneaks in through every crack," the PAN legislator stated.

He indicated that, given the current situation, he will speak with the other legislators from the political parties, highlighting the importance of all parties' involvement, as it is a problem that cannot be left unresolved.

Regarding the statements of civil society and business organizations, in the sense of maintaining coordination, Anaya Llamas pointed out that these demonstrations must be addressed, given that perception is important because it measures the feelings of the public.

"Security is a feeling, it's what people perceive," he noted, emphasizing that ongoing communication between authorities and all sectors of society must be restored, something that has been neglected.

There is a vacuum of authority: Marcelo Torres

PAN federal deputy Marcelo Torres highlighted the severity of the security crisis in Torreón and stated that the city is without a government and that there is a power vacuum.

"What's happening in Torreón today is extremely serious: municipal police protesting against their own superiors, the city lacking preventive patrols, and the mayor absent, unable to address the security disaster.

"Where is the authority that promised to protect Torreón families? Who will take responsibility for the increase in violence and the neglect of our streets?" he emphasized, referring to the work stoppage that took place yesterday at the municipal government.

He considered the inability to lead clearly evident and demanded that Mayor Román Alberto Cepeda González immediately address the conflict, restore security, and stop hiding the crisis that is affecting the lives of thousands of citizens.

"Torreón is adrift today. How shameful that while insecurity grows, our police officers have to protest abuses by their own commanders! And meanwhile, the mayor hides, unable to confront the chaos his lack of leadership has caused," said the federal legislator from the National Action Party.

Morena legislators joined in the criticism of what they described as a profound security crisis and demanded that the Municipality assume its responsibility to make the necessary corrections not only to the police, but also to high-ranking officials.

This was stated by Senator Luis Fernando Salazar, who He said that what is happening in the Municipal Police is clearly a sign of a crisis that citizens perceive. , and considered that the situation has worsened since Mayor Román Alberto Cepeda decided to remove state elements from the Reaction Group and leave it with only members of the DSPM, in September 2024.

He said that since then, not only has there been a lack of coordination with the State, but also an excess and abuse in which the elements have been incurring.

He stated that the demands of the police officers who went on strike yesterday must be listened to, because, he said, their demands are certainly legitimate.

"They are trained and disciplined police officers, and they have worked to provide that sense of security to citizens, but when they are poorly led, they are disrupted by poor management, all due to a breakdown in coordination with state authorities."

Luis Fernando Salazar considered that today, human rights violations and violations of citizens' physical integrity are recurrent, not as isolated incidents, but as a modus operandi of those in charge of the Municipal Police, where the abuse of power has become the hallmark of the organization.

"It already happened at the Los Reyes bar; in Morelos with another operational commander who beat a young man; the threats from the director (César Perales) to a businessman; and, most seriously, the murder of the young man from the Nuevo Mieleras community," he said.

The Morena senator indicated that he will monitor the issue from the legislative level and ensure that the State Attorney General's Office addresses citizen complaints against the corporation's leadership.

“Torreón is a mess. It deteriorated terribly even before the end of the previous administration, worse than it was already. The crisis that began in September 2024 is profound, escalating, and already affecting the quality of life of Torreón's citizens.”

For her part, federal representative Cintia Cuevas spoke out on social media against what's happening within the Torreón Municipal Police, pointing out that it's no secret that fees are being collected internally.

He said that "it's time to assume responsibility," and called on Governor Manolo Jiménez and the mayor to address and resolve this problem. Meanwhile, he said, the Sedena (National Security Forces) and the National Guard are providing security in Torreón, and he asked citizens to remain calm.
