Hurricane season 2025 in Yucatan: When does it start and what are their names?

The 2025 hurricane season in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans is about to begin, and experts have already released their forecasts for this year. With weather conditions that could favor the formation of cyclones, a period of moderate to high activity is expected.
The Atlantic hurricane season officially begins on June 1 and runs through November 30. In the Pacific , the period begins earlier, on May 15, and also ends in late November.
During these months, weather conditions favor the formation of tropical cyclones, which can evolve into tropical storms or hurricanes of different categories, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) of the United States.

Forecasts from weather agencies such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Colorado State University suggest that 2025 could see activity similar to or even above the historical average.
A possible impact of the La Niña phenomenon is expected, which generally increases the frequency and intensity of hurricanes in the Atlantic, while in the Pacific it can reduce the formation of cyclones.
Each year, the World Meteorological Organization assigns names to tropical cyclones that form in the Atlantic and Pacific.
By 2025 , the first hurricane in the Atlantic will be named Andrea , followed by Barry, Chantal and Dexter, the latter replacing Dorian, retired due to its devastating impact in 2019.
The full list of names includes:
- Atlantic : Andrea, Barry, Chantal, Dexter, Erin, Fernand, Gabrielle, Humberto, Imelda, Jerry, Karen, Lorenzo, Melissa, Nestor, Olga, Pablo, Rebekah, Sebastien, Tanya, Van and Wendy.
- Pacific : Alvin, Barbara, Cosme, Dalila, Erick, Flossie, Gil, Henriette, Ivo, Juliette, Kiko, Lorena, Mario, Narda, Octave, Priscilla, Raymond, Sonia, Tico, Velma, Wallis, Xina, York and Zelda.
Names are reused on a six-year cycle unless a hurricane has caused significant damage and the name is removed from the list.
Climate models indicate that the 2025 hurricane season could be intense , especially along the Gulf Coast and the Caribbean. In 2024, there were 30 named tropical systems, of which 15 evolved into hurricanes.

This year, forecasters expect at least 15 tropical storms in the Atlantic, with seven potential hurricanes , of which at least three could reach major categories.
Chiapas is one of the regions of Mexico most vulnerable to the indirect effects of tropical cyclones, due to its geographic location and exposure to heavy rains and landslides.
Although it does not always experience direct impacts from hurricanes, rainfall and wind gusts generated by distant systems can cause flooding and property damage in the region.
