Chayanne is being asked to change his title from 'Torero'. What's the reason?

Puerto Rican singer Chayanne is being asked to change the title of his hit song "Torero," but why? Here's what he's doing.

Singer Elmer Figuero Arce, better known as Chayanne, who is preparing for his return to Mexico with the 'Bailemos Otra Vez' tour at the Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City, received a peculiar request, intending to change the name of his hit song "Torero," released as part of his first single from the greatest hits album Grandes Éxitos, in 2002.

Who is requesting the name change from 'Torero' and why?

The request came from the organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), who asked "America's Sweetheart" to change his name from 'Torero,' arguing that it somehow glorifies bullfighting.

In this regard, through an official PETA letter from Vice President Mimi Bekhechi, which was sent to Chayanne's offices, the Puerto Rican was asked to name the song "Bombero" instead, in order to avoid the alleged glorification of bullfighting.

Since they claim that such practices, which are considered animal cruelty, are no longer "in tune" with the values professed today.

"The word bullfighter is inevitably linked to the torture and killing of animals for pure entertainment. Glorifying this figure doesn't fit with 21st-century sensibilities," reads the letter sent to Lele Pons 's uncle.

While the change they offer, they say, would be better, as it would give a positive and honoring focus to a sector that risks its life for others, rather than to someone who threatens the lives of another living being, like bullfighters.

"Firefighters represent courage, dedication, and empathy—values most of us admire. Firefighters save lives by putting their lives on the line, and for that, they deserve to be celebrated." While associating the word "torero" with bullfighting risks legitimizing a practice many want to abolish. "Meanwhile, an artist with your influence has the power to positively impact culture, and updating the song's name would send a powerful message of compassion," the statement reads.
