Cartel operation sparks diplomatic crisis: Guatemala denounces Mexican incursion

The Guatemalan government formally protested to Mexico the incursion of Mexican state forces into Guatemalan territory last Sunday, June 8, in La Mesilla, Huehuetenango.
However, this confrontation, which began as a display in the presence of organized crime members, also revealed the alleged complicity of Guatemalan agents.
Shooting complicates relations with GuatemalaOn June 8, the municipal government of Huehuetenango, Guatemala, confirmed the aggressive confrontation following the arrival of Mexican authorities in the border area of La Mesilla, due to the pursuit of alleged hitmen.
In response to these events, the Constitutional Governor of the State of Chiapas, Eduardo Ramírez, denounced the alleged collusion between the hitmen and Guatemalan security forces through his personal X account. "Colluding is no small feat, but what's worse is being at the service of criminals," he wrote.
Meanwhile, the Guatemalan Foreign Ministry denounced the incursion by members of the Immediate Reaction Force (PAKAL) of the state of Chiapas. It described the incident as an uncoordinated action that put civilians at risk and demanded an investigation, as well as greater cooperation in border security.
"This incursion into Guatemalan territory, in an urban and commercial area, was carried out outside the security coordination mechanisms between the two countries, endangered the lives of civilians, and does not contribute to good neighborly relations between states," the document explains.
