Nicola Pietrangeli hospitalized at Gemelli in Rome, his son Giorgio died in the last few hours

Nicola Pietrangeli is hospitalized at the Policlinico Gemelli in Rome. According to what LaPresse has learned, the 91-year-old historic tennis champion, winner of two Roland Garros, is in the hospital in the capital for tests. In the past few hours his son Giorgio, a surfing champion in the 80s, died at the age of 59, in Rome, due to an incurable disease. In recent months Nicola Pietrangeli had undergone surgery, again at the Gemelli, following a hip fracture sustained in an accidental fall.

Giorgio Pietrangeli was one of the first Italian surfing champions in the 1980s: he participated with the National Team in the 1988 World Championships in Puerto Rico and in the European Championships in Portugal the following year. In 1985 he participated in the European Championships in Forte dei Marmi, in 1989 he won the Italian Championship in Viareggio. Giorgio leaves behind his father Nicola, his wife Carola, his daughter Nicola and his brothers Marco and Filippo. "The president of the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation Angelo Binaghi and the entire tennis movement embrace with affection the family and all those who lived alongside him in this moment of immense pain", writes the Fitp.
