Decree to save football, two out of three Italians are against it

In the days when the Government is preparing to take specific measures on the world of sport, a survey by Winpoll reveals that two out of three Italians are against state intervention to financially support football clubs. The figures say that 66% are against public measures on the subject, only 6% of Italians are in favor. Going into detail, for the relaunch of Italian football, 73% of Italians think that investments in youth sectors are needed. The need to build new stadiums (30%) and collaboration between clubs and companies (21%) are separated in multiple choice questions.
The “save football” decree, drawn up by the Meloni Government in 2022, is judged negatively by 69% of citizens, who consider it unfair and not a priority. The decree allowed the payment of a tax debt of 890 million in 60 installments, but only 31% are in favor (8% strongly agree and 23% somewhat), while the clear majority judges it negatively (45% strongly disagree and 24 slightly agree).
The Winpoll survey was commissioned by Scenari Politici, on Italians and football. An analysis that allows you to cross-reference the data with those of political representatives. Among the voters of the majority parties, only 26% of the voters of Fratelli d'Italia and 35% of those of Forza Italia are in favor of state intervention. Among the voters of the PD and M5S, those in favor stop at 13% and 12% respectively.
The assessment of the indebtedness of Italian companies is negative: 63% consider it "not at all positive" and only 14% of Italians think that Italian football is healthy. The survey was conducted by Winpoll between 3 and 13 June 2025 on a sample of 1000 subjects representative of the Italian population aged 18 and over.
