Third term for governors, Lega amendment rejected in Senate: Forza Italia builds wall, split in majority

The clash

The League remains isolated in the majority on the third mandate for governors . The battle of the Carroccio is in fact stopped by the government partners: the amendment presented by Matteo Salvini 's senators to the bill on the adjustment of the number of regional councilors and assessors under examination by the Constitutional Affairs Commission at Palazzo Madama was rejected.
The government, which had deferred to the opinion of the Commission thus trying not to intervene directly on the issue, finally took note of the result of the vote: there were 15 votes against , five in favour (the three members of the League plus a senator from Autonomia and Italia Viva) and the abstention of the president of the commission Balboni and Domenico Matera, both from Fratelli d'Italia.
A 'no' that seemed obvious after the declarations of the last few days by Forza Italia, the party of the other deputy prime minister Antonio Tajani strongly opposed to the third mandate. "I will not sell myself for a plate of lentils", the Foreign Minister and leader of the Azzurri had said scathingly, responding to the hypothesis of possible internal agreements within the majority, in particular on the ius scholae .
"There were two abstentions by FdI and I must say that I appreciated the willingness to address the issue and find possible solutions. I did not appreciate the wall erected by Forza Italia . It is not a question of government policy, but I did not appreciate this gesture", was instead the immediate comment after the vote in the Commission by Roberto Calderoli , the Northern League minister for Regional Affairs, following the fifth rejection of the text.
The Democratic Party is taking advantage of the internal split in the majority to attack the executive, through the Democratic Party group leader Francesco Boccia , who speaks of "the hypothesis of a third mandate definitively sunk" but above all of "tensions within the government team that continue". For the Democratic Party group leader in the Senate "the majority is divided and the spite between the right-wing parties continues", "we are faced with a Souk in which promises and hypotheses of reforms are being bartered which after almost three years, however, remain at a standstill: this applies to differentiated autonomy, it applies to the Premiership, it applies to the separation of the careers of magistrates that we are discussing in the Senate but which is not included in the calendar of the Chamber of Deputies for the next few weeks".
Antonio Tajani , who had also been very harsh in rejecting the proposal for a third Lega mandate, should personally respond to Boccia: despite the clash in the Commission, in the government majority "absolutely nothing is happening. It's not that the center-right is based on the third mandate, our coalition is based on political agreements , on justice issues, on the reform of the premiership, on the reform of autonomy, therefore on serious and important issues".
