Giani and the clash with De Luca. “No postponement, we will vote in October”

Florence, 27 June 2025 – “To the Tuscans I say, let's get ready. We will vote on October 12 or 19 , according to what the Constitution tells us. This means presenting the lists 30 days in advance, in September, calling the electoral rallies for the second half of August. So here we are: it is right that the opinion returns to the sovereign people. Elections are not a whim of the president in office".
In the day of Caporetto in the Senate of the supporters of the third term, the Nazarene still has Eugenio Giani, the politician, in the pits waiting for the second candidacy. Blame the (im)possible joints that Elly Schlein has to operate in Campania and Puglia in a very broad field. But Eugenio Giani, the governor, having consumed the rift between colleagues - even in the party, with Emiliano's Puglia absent, like Francesco Acquaroli's Marche (FdI) - in the Conference of the Regions held the course straight, taking the chestnuts out of the fire for Schlein, with respect to the coup de théâtre set up by the sheriff Vincenzo De Luca with the approval of the center-right governors directly involved, starting with Luca Zaia: the postponement of the vote to spring '26.
How did De Luca motivate the request for a “brief postponement” of the elections? “The reasons given referred to the approval of both strategic acts and projects related to the PNRR (on health, environment, infrastructure), and of the budget estimate in the context of the current legislature. But also, I must admit, for an in-depth discussion on the third mandate. President Massimiliano Fedriga included this proposal at the fourth point on the agenda of the work with the desire to draft a unitary document with which to welcome De Luca's proposal and then submit it to the government's attention”. And what did you say at that point? “I said no. It is necessary to follow our Constitution which in Article 122 provides for a 5-year term for the legislative system and that the President of the Region calls the elections in a time frame close to the five-year expiry of the legislature, which for Tuscany in 2020 was September 20-21. In light of this non-homogeneous situation, the Conference decided not to take a position on the postponement of the elections. Therefore, no document was approved and I therefore feel encouraged to prepare all the documents to prepare for the electoral deadline, follow the appropriate organizational standards and vote for the regional elections in Tuscany either on October 12 or 19”. So is the postponement for the execution of ordinary government activities a mistake? “We are in a state of law and we must respect the laws that provide for a precise term of office. The date of the vote cannot be the option in the approval or convenience of the president in office”. Did you feel isolated in arguing your reasons against a part of your party? "On the contrary, I felt very comfortable in this battle beyond a tactically absent Emiliano and an energetic De Luca who tried to support his reasons for the postponement. The councilors of Emilia-Romagna, Sardinia and Umbria intervened in my support at the Conference". The same, on the eve, from the national leadership group of the Democratic Party.
