Desio, 4-way race for mayor's seat after political earthquake: who are the candidates

Desio (Monza e Brianza) – Four candidates running for the local elections: over the weekend, over 32,600 voters will be called to choose the mayor who will lead the city for the next five years. An unexpected vote until a few months ago: until January, Simone Gargiulo, despite the controversy, was firmly seated in his chair. Then, suddenly, the mass resignation of sixteen city councilors , eight from the majority and eight from the minority. Result: dissolution of the city council , arrival of the prefectural commissioner and calling of elections.
With these premises, Desio is now the largest city in Lombardy for these administrative elections.
Andrea VillaAndrea Villa , former deputy mayor of Gargiulo, will try to keep the center-right in government. He, a historic provincial commissioner of the League , is also supported by Fratelli d'Italia, Forza Italia (which was his opponent last time) as well as the civic lists Indipendenza and Desio Ideale. Historic themes in his electoral program, including a particular focus on security, but there is also an element of novelty: bringing the university to Desio and creating a student residence in the former hospital on Corso Italia, also attractive to all the university students who currently gravitate towards Milan.
Charles MoscatelliHis number one opponent will be Carlo Moscatelli , head of a coalition composed of P artito Democratico, Italia Viva and Polo civico (which brings together three civic lists of the territory, namely Desio Viva, Desio Libera and Insieme per Desio). In his group there are also those who left Fratelli d'Italia and Lega who had contributed to the end of the previous administration. In his program, in particular, the care of the territory that today, in many of its parts, is full of degraded areas and often reduced to the role of an open-air landfill . Moscatelli had already been a candidate at the beginning of the 2000s for the Partito Democratico, then defeated by the center-right of Gianpiero Mariani .
Alessio AlbertiThere are also two outsiders fighting to conquer the municipality. One is Alessio Alberti , who before presenting his candidacy had distributed a questionnaire in the territory (also publishing it online) to share the needs with the citizens. Now Alberti is supported by his civic list Desio Popolare, but also by Azione and Partito Repubblicano. He presents himself as the only candidate of the center, trying to intercept the vote of the moderates.
Iaia PiumattiLeading the coalition composed of Sinistra per Desio and Movimento 5 Stelle is Iaia Piumatti . For her, beyond social issues, an objective at the top of the list also for reasons of time not to be wasted: to oppose the construction of the Pedemontana highway . Unlike Alberti, she emphasizes that she is the only left-wing candidate, believing that Moscatelli, having with him former Brothers of Italy and the League, cannot represent the values of this political party.
