The number of Italian companies riding the wave of e-commerce is soaring. At the end of 2024, B2C e-commerce companies registered in the Business Register of the Chambers of Commerce were 43,379, with an increase of 30,058 units compared to 2014 and an increase of 225.6 over the decade. This is what emerges from the latest InfoCamere-Unioncamere analysis on Movimprese data which highlights Lombardy's leadership in the regional ranking. Of the total, one fifth of the companies are in Lombardy with 8,545 online retail businesses. Campania follows with 6,484 companies (14.9%) and Lazio with 5,088 (11.7%). The same regions take the podium for growth in absolute value over the decade considered: +6,014 companies in Lombardy, +5,170 in Campania and +3,499 in Lazio. E-commerce is struggling in Valle d'Aosta (53 companies), Molise (158) and Basilicata (276) while each of the following regions (Umbria, Trentino-Alto Adige and Friuli-Venezia Giulia) has approximately 590 online commercial activities.

Campania also leads the ranking of regions with the highest percentage growth rate in the decade (+393.5%), followed by Calabria (+294.2%) and Molise (+251.1%). These numbers demonstrate a transversal and now deep-rooted diffusion of these activities in all territories. Naples emerges as the first province in Italy in terms of number (4,120) of e-commerce companies. Rome follows with 3,999 (equal to 9.2% of the total) and Milan with 3,895 (9%). Naples also stands out for the highest absolute balance in the period (+3,418 companies) and for the most marked percentage growth (+486.9%). The Neapolitan data highlights how the digital revolution is not a prerogative of the economic capitals of the country but a distributed, widespread phenomenon, with strong potential even in traditionally less digitalized contexts.
