At the Triennale there is a new creative space for girls and boys: Gioco

As part of the redesign of the Park Plan, which was completely renovated and opened to the public last May, Triennale Milano created Gioco , a new space dedicated to children of all ages. Open to all throughout the day, Gioco is a space for imagination and creativity, embracing a variety of activities, both active and contemplative. Gioco hosts meetings and workshops organized by Triennale's education department, but is also open to families.
The opening of Gioco is part of the process that Triennale initiated with the 2022-2026 strategic plan and with the Triennale Manifesto for Families , presented in February 2025, which collects the principles that guide the institution in a process of welcome and accessibility aimed at all members of all family units.
The design of the play space, like the rest of the Piano Parco, was entrusted to AR.CH.IT Luca Cipelletti , while the furnishings were designed by the French studio smarin, specializing in the creation of spaces for interaction and collective invention. The furnishings are based on modular cork blocks and fir tops, materials selected for their sustainability, longevity, and sensorial qualities . Assembled without nails or screws, the blocks can be combined to form desks, seats, room dividers, loungers, storage units, or play structures. Smarin proposed a flexible solution that addresses Triennale's need for a space that can be quickly reconfigured based on its uses. In just a few minutes, the space can transform to create a workspace, a dance studio, a screening room, a play area, or a haven for quiet relaxation. The lightweight, modular elements allow the space to open up or divide fluidly, encouraging spontaneous and creative use. When free space is needed, the blocks can be stacked and stored compactly, keeping the environment free and effortlessly adaptable. Rooted in the cultural life of the institution, Gioco is a shared design experiment, where girls and boys are free to move, think, and create .
The space was designed with the needs of museum visitors with children in mind: there's a stroller parking area, lockers for storing items, a water dispenser, and a restroom with a changing table. For snacks, lunch, and dinner, the Cucina Triennale restaurant and café, also located on the Park Level, offers a special children's menu.
Gioco is open Tuesday through Sunday, from 10:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m .: families visiting Triennale can find a rich selection of materials here that encourage play and interaction, free to browse and use. There are modules and tools for playing, designing, building, and drawing, in a small, dedicated space that fosters creative thinking and concentration. A large collection of books and illustrated albums, in Italian and English, selected from leading international children's book authors, is also available.
For greater accessibility , the selection includes books in AAC (augmentative and alternative communication), silent books (books in which the story is told only through illustrations), and books that introduce children to LIS (Italian Sign Language). You can also find all of Triennale's Junior Albums, a series of illustrated publications with activities, curiosities, and insights dedicated to the exhibitions.
Gioco will feature workshops and laboratories for children , initiatives aimed at schools of all levels, and educational experiences inspired by the Triennale Milano exhibitions and performances in the Triennale's program. Workshops and activities dedicated to Inequalities, the 24th International Exhibition, are scheduled until November 9th.
Gioco also hosts public program meetings designed for families: a series of educational sessions for adults and growth support programs, such as the Officina Famiglie Let's Talk! series of meetings dedicated to topics such as sentimental education, nutritional education, and gender identity.
The initiative's partners include Education Partner Scalo Milano, Textile Partner Dedar, and Institutional Partners Deloitte and Fondazione Deloitte, Lavazza Group and Salone del Mobile.Milano.
