Taxi protest: Ischia's municipality finds it "excessive and unjustified."

With a press release, the Municipality of Ischia has issued a press release to clarify the position of the body led by Mayor Enzo Ferrandino: "In reference to the recent events that have affected the taxi industry, the Municipality of Ischia clarifies the following. With ordinance no. 112 of 14 July 2025 , signed by the Commander of the Local Police, Chiara Romano , two taxi stalls located on Via Alfredo De Luca were removed, in a section already subject to a parking ban under previous provisions, between Piazza Antica Reggia and Via delle Terme."
The statement continues: "The decision was made following the safety concerns identified , particularly due to the proximity of a pedestrian crossing , as well as to meet a growing need for commercial and tourism redevelopment of the area. It should also be noted that the taxi parking area at the former Jolly car park , located less than 50 meters from the removed stalls, is considered fully suitable for ensuring the efficiency of the taxi service, which the Municipality recognizes as essential but which, at the same time, must be compatible with the general needs of the area and the community."
And he adds, "Regarding the protest launched following the adoption of the measure, deemed excessive and unjustified, it is highlighted that the manner in which it was organized is causing disruption to the continuity of public transport , causing significant disruption to the many tourists on the island, especially on weekends. To address this situation and ensure mobility, the Mayor of Ischia, Enzo Ferrandino , has signed a further ordinance (118 of 18 July 2025) , which authorizes the use of taxi spaces also for NCC (Rental with Driver) vehicles with predetermined tariffs in force , thus ensuring the continuity of non-scheduled public transport services."
"The Municipality remains open to dialogue, provided it is fair and respectful of ordinary civil coexistence, in the belief that every legitimate need," the statement concludes, "must be resolved in compliance with the rules and the general interest of the community."
